We are looking for a Youth Programme Officer with a love of nature, cooking and gardening to join our small and enthusiastic team to oversee the development management and delivery of a unique youth programme. You will work with disadvantaged young people across the Borough, motivating and supporting them to engage in enriching and fun activities that help focus on their future and help them to progress positively and reach their potential. This role is made possible by Reedham Children’s Trust.

Salary

£23,000 per annum (Full-Time Equivalent) + 5% pension.

Terms

3 days per week = 21 hours p/w.

24 months fixed contract (continuation subject to further funding).

The role will involve some regular weekend and evening sessions.

This post is subject to an enhanced DBS check.

This role is accountable to the Managing Director, Amanda McGrath.

Location

Good Food Matters (Mickleham Way,  New Addington, Croydon, CR0 0PN) with some working from home and community work agreed in advance. 

About the role

Key responsibilities

  • Manage the provision of youth services at Good Food Matters and take a leading role in ensuring children and young people in Croydon have access to a wide range of services to improve their mental health and emotional wellbeing. 

  • Plan the annual youth programme, putting children and young people at the heart of the work of the project, including co-designing an engaging and quality range of services for the youth programme with young people.

  • Work with the MD to develop and expand existing and new services and projects to ensure a sustainable future for our youth service.

Additional responsibilities

As part of our small, diverse and dedicated team we are looking for a team player who will support both youth work and the overall objectives of the organisation, supporting other areas of the charity particularly where they overlap.

Risk and safety

  • Ensure that risk assessments are completed before any youth activity.

  • Work within agreed budgets.

  • Deliver youth work in line with organisational objectives and funders requirements.

Monitoring and evaluation

  • Ensure programmes meet funder requirements through robust monitoring and 

  • evaluation processes.

  • Work collaboratively to produce funders reports as required. 

  • Maintain confidential records and work within the Data Protection Act/GDPR.

Sustainability

  • Support the MD identifying and developing future funding opportunities to ensure the sustainability of growth of our youth service.

  • Deliver our services in a sustainable way and be mindful of our environment.

Quality

  • Attend regular clinical supervisory sessions with the external clinical supervisors.

  • Deliver well planned and engaging quality services.

Promotion

  • Act as a point of referral, providing advice and information on the youth service and taking referrals directly from children, young people, families, and partner agencies.  

  • Develop a stronger social media presence and develop across new and emerging platforms that are most relevant and engaging for young people.

Partner working and stakeholder engagement

  • Attend service meetings as required. 

  • Work closely with the other colleagues for effective delivery of the youth service.

  • Promote and publicise the youth service among relevant agencies, referrers, service users and potential service users. 

  • Work alongside community partners, local schools, colleges and youth services, funders, social services, CAMS and GP surgeries. 

 Safeguarding 

  • Ensure the safeguarding of children, young people and vulnerable adults is a priority within the service and report any critical concerns to Principal Safeguarding Officer (PSO) Amanda McGrath.

  • Undertake relevant safeguarding training and update as required.

Flexibility 

  • To deliver services effectively, a degree of flexibility is needed and the post-holder may be required to perform work not specifically referred to above. 

  • The job description will be subject to periodic review with the post-holder to ensure it accurately reflects the duties of the job.

 Personal development

  • Undertake training relevant to the job and keep up to date with issues relevant to providing a good service for young people and maintain and develop own professional practice.

About you

The ideal candidate will have had some experience of working in schools and/or community settings facilitating youth led work. They will be organised and self-motivated, inspirational, good at promotion and able to engage young people from diverse backgrounds.

The successful candidate will either have relevant youth work and/or equivalent qualifications and project co-ordination experience or be happy to undertake training to achieve this.  A full training program and clinical supervision is available.

  • Strong interpersonal/communication skills.

  • Knowledge, experience and understanding of working with young people. 

  • Team player who shares our organisational values and vision.

Desirable capabilities

  • Ability to plan and deliver sessions in a range of activities such as woodwork, arts, and crafts.

  • Knowledge and understanding of gardening ideally in a community/ project.  

  • Good written and IT skills.

  • Other language skills.

  • Available to work flexibly to meet the needs of the service. 

  • Ability to think and work creatively. 

  • Use and share best practice in service delivery from within and outside the organisation.

  • Develop external knowledge of services to sign post users to e.g., mental health support, CAB, etc.

  • Respond proactively to organisational change.

  • Understand relevant policies and legislation. 

  • Maintain confidentiality regarding client information and ensure that use of the information complies with our policies and the Data Protection Act.
